From the O.R. Tambo International Airport your guide will drive you along the R21 freeway to Tshwane, formerly known as Pretoria, which lies 50km to the north. This route takes you across typical Highveld scenery, gradually dropping in altitude as you pass the outlying suburbs of Irene and Centurion on the approach to Pretoria. The city soon comes into view with the impressive buildings of UNISA (University of South Africa) dominating the skyline.

Before entering the city itself, your guide will make a detour past the Voortrekker Monument, one of the most well known and most visited tourist attractions in South Africa, which sits on a hill overlooking the city in the valley below. The route then passes the Pretoria Central Prison into the city centre. This is the “Jacaranda City”, so named for the thousands of Jacaranda trees that line the city streets and which are covered in mauve blossoms each October, a sight well worth seeing!

Pretoria has many historic buildings, some of which date back to the 1890’s during the time that Paul Kruger was President of the old South African (or Transvaal) Republic. Your guide will take a route passing the best examples – Pretoria Railway Station, the City Hall, Museum of Natural History, the Palace of Justice, the old Raadsaal (Parliament Building), Paul Kruger’s house and his statue on Church Square. The most famous building of all is the Union Building, where the State President and his Deputy have their offices. This Herbert Baker designed building sits on a hillside overlooking the city and there will be a short stop here before you reach your hotel.
