In 1995, after 17 years in the tourism industry working for
various tour operators, Eugene Armer teamed up with two partners to
venture into the transport side of the industry, and so Wilro Tours
& Transfers was born. In 1999, Eugene bought out his partners
and has since continued to manage the business as the sole
owner.
The company's name is rooted in the early history of this part
of South Africa, where in the 1880's the Witwatersrand (ridge of
white waters) became well known around the world to gold
prospectors, adventurers and entrepreneurs. The name "Wilro" is
taken from two farms that existed on the western Witwatersrand,
Wilgespruit (Willow Creek) and Roodekrans (red cliff). Two
brothers, Fred and Harry Struben, prospected for gold on these
farms, discovering the Confidence Reef before the discovery of the
main reef in 1886. The discovery of gold in turn led to the
establishment of Johannesburg, which has become South Africa's
largest city and its commercial and financial capital.
Today, we are based in Randburg in the northern suburbs
of Johannesburg and operate a fleet of twelve vehicles up to 7
seats in size. Larger vehicles are contracted in, to suit customer
requirements. The company specialises in providing sightseeing
tours within Gauteng province, as well as local and long-distance
transfers. Our drivers are also registered tourist guides and aim
to provide each of our guests with a memorable experience, whether
it be a short trip from airport to hotel, or several days of
sightseeing in and around Gauteng.
We are bonded members of SATSA (Southern Africa Tourism
Services Association) and, to meet all their stringent criteria, we
are comprehensively insured through One Commercial Investment
Holdings (1Com), underwriters for ABSA Insurance Risk Management
Services Limited.
